    But he's not on a house. :)

The Lovich brothers swear the area is in a frost pocket that is pretty barren of these species. They wanted to make sure these records got in there. The Nerodia is on its way to collections in the Smithsonian - I'll update the record with collections/voucher numbers when Rob gets them.

It's about time I see some herps from you! Thanks for carrying the whole team on box turtle data last summer. We'll see you again soon!

They should be active year-round, just down in the depths. Of course they'll restrict activity in the colder months, but not completely. I had a very similar leech on a spotted turtle in a vernal pool today. It was attached to the shell and not the animal, and I managed to remove it. I realize yours here are also not attached to flesh. Interesting find!

I confirmed with Jarrod that the leaves seem to be setting off the PIR. Nothing else is moving in the other videos, including the bird. There's probably a heat differential between the leaves close to the camera and the ground behind them. Neither the snake reaching the bird nor the bird leaving the eggs produced enough to set the camera in motion, and it didn't continue to take more photos as the snake engulfed that egg. We had a little debate over whether that first egg is already consumed or is hidden by the snake. As for predation, Birds of NA online suggests 7% of whip nest predation is attributed to snakes, but the reference documentation is screwed up so we can't find the original study, possibly Kansas-based. I passed along the UC Davis website. These are all stills captured from a very brief video.
