30+ years of surveying for amphibians and reptiles in the "neighborhood" where the turtle was found. It's practically my backyard. The nearest locality from the DOR site with Sternotherus would be Presque Isle (4+ kms) and the Lake Erie shoreline (at 2+ kms). There are man-made ponds ca 1 km to the west that I've extensively trapped and waded, only to get painted turtles and snappers. Sternotherus are likely in the extreme western part of the county (they are found just across the border in Conneaut Creek, Ohio). I wouldn't be surprised if they were found in some of the more permanent natural wetlands in the county. I guess I can't rule out the unlikely possibility that it was dropped by an eagle. Interestingly, I found a DOR Graptemys geographica, (also very unlikely to have come from any nearby natural population) less than a km east on the same highway. The G. geographica is PARS record #85900.

Have you considered playing the lottery? Personally, I'm not a betting man, but if that happened to me...Hope you have more days like that!

...and a tick for each forelimb. Ticks are relatively common on skinks.

A two-in-one observation! or is it a snake-tongued toad? Excellent observation!
